What’s a “Notice of Termination”?

In Japan, when you want to move out of your rental apartment, you need to tell your landlord in advance. This is called “kaiyaku yokoku”, which basically means “termination notice.”
If you skip this step or do it too late you could end up paying rent for extra time, even if you’ve already moved out.

How much notice do you need to give?
Most of the time, it’s 1 month, but some contracts ask for 2 months’ notice. Check your rental agreement (that stack of papers you probably ignored when you moved in).

How Do You Actually Give Notice?

Pretty easy. Here’s the usual process:
Send a notice – A simple email or letter works. Some rental agencies have online forms.

What About Rent and Fees?
You only pay rent until your move-out date, and it’s usually calculated by the day (not the full month).
